இருவராய் வந்தார்

 மை வண்ண நறும் குஞ்சி குழல் பின் தாழ

மகரம் சேர் குழை இரு பாடு இலங்கி யாட

எய் வண்ண வெஞ்சிலையே துணையா இங்கே

இருவராய் வந்தார் என் முன்னே நின்றார்

கை வண்ணம் தாமரை வாய் கமலம் போலும்

கண் இணையும் அரவிந்தம் அடியும் அஃதே

அவ்வண்ணத்தவர் நிலைமை கண்டும் தோழி!

அவரை நாம் தேவர் என்று அஞ்சினோமே

குறிப்பு

தாண்டகம் என்பது ஒரு பா வகை. குறுந்தாண்டகம் ஆறு சீர்களில் பயின்று வரும்.

நெடுந்தாண்டகம் எட்டு சீர்களில் பயின்று வரும்.

மேலே காண்பது நெடுந்தாண்டகம்.  பொருள் கொள்வதற்கு வசதியாக நாம் பிரித்து பிரித்து எழுதியிருக்கிறோம். 

ஆனால் உண்மையில் சீர் வருமாறு பிரிக்கப்பட வேண்டும்.

மைவண்ண/ நறுங்குஞ்சி/ குழல்பின்/தாழ  4 சீர்

மகரஞ்சேர்/ குழையிருபாடு/ இலங்கி /ஆட.  4 சீர்

ஆக  மொத்தம் எட்டு சீர்

இது போல அடுத்த வரி அடுத்த வரி என்று நான்கு வரிகள் வரும்.

ஆழ்வார் நாயகி பாவத்தில் தன் தோழியுடன் பேசுவதாக இந்தப் பாசுரம் அமைந்திருக்கிறது.

கையில் சிலையேந்தி வரும் இருவர் யாரென்று சொல்லத் தேவையில்லை.

She says to her friend

Hair fragrant and black ink in colour

Curling behind, over the shoulders

The ear drops, fish shaped, 

Dangling on both sides in a rhythm..

With bows to pull in their arms as guard

They came here, the Two, stood before me,

Palms the colour of lotus, mouth as lotus,

The pair of eyes and the feet like lotus

Seeing them, their demeanour, my friend,

I feared they were from the other World

The above is a translation.of a particular type of Tamil verse known as Thandakam.  Thandakam is of two types.

1. Kurunthandakam

       2. Nedunthantakam.    

Kurunthandakam has a meter of 6 words each in 4 stanzas while Nedunthantagam follows a pattern of 8 words each  in 4 stanzas.

The English  translation follows a blank verse pattern and attempts to bring the essence of the original. Here in this verse Thirumangai Alwar takes the role of a mistress who speaks  to her friend about the two young men with bows whom she chances to meet on the way

Needless to say that the two young men are Ram and Laxman from the Great epic Ramayana.
